New Frontiers is a strategic board game that takes players into a spacefaring setting where they build galactic empires through exploring new worlds, developing technologies, and colonizing planets. The game is part of the Race for the Galaxy series and incorporates mechanics from games like Puerto Rico and Roll for the Galaxy.
Players expand their galactic empires by exploring planets, advancing technologies, and competing for dominance in the galaxy. Each player leads their own civilization, growing through colonization, trade, and development.
Thematically, the game blends the feeling of space colonization with economic and technological challenges, creating a rich and varied gameplay experience.
Players choose from seven possible actions (explore, settle, develop, produce, trade/consume, etc.). Only the selected phase is executed, with the chooser gaining a bonus. Players draw planets randomly from a bag and add them to their player boards. Planets can be settled using military strength or money, requiring colonists—a new mechanic introduced in this game. Technological advancements provide bonuses and discounts but are limited in number on the shared market. Planets produce goods that can be traded for money or consumed for points. The game ends when a player settles more than seven planets, purchases more than ten developments, or when victory points or colonists run out. The game is asymmetric, with high variability thanks to different planets, development tiles, and strategies.
