Res Arcana is a strategic card‑based board game that places players in the role of powerful mages competing for control over ancient Places of Power and mystical Monuments. It is designed for 2 to 4 players and typically lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.
In the world of Res Arcana, mages harness five types of essences — Life, Death, Elan, Calm, and Gold — to perform magical rituals, create artifacts, and summon mighty creatures such as dragons. The goal of the game is to accumulate 10 or more influence points by gaining control of Places of Power and Monuments.
The game is played over several rounds, each consisting of three main phases:
- Players activate their cards and collect the essences those cards generate.
- Players take turns performing a single action, such as playing an artifact from their hand, claiming a Monument or Place of Power, discarding a card for essences, using an ability on one of their cards, or passing for the round.
- After all actions are completed, players check whether anyone has reached 10 or more influence points. If no one has achieved victory, the game continues into the next round.
